No roads lead to Juneau, Alaska's state capital.  The only way into it is by air or sea.  Gold is what brought attention to the area back in the 1880's and remained Juneau's mainstay until 1944 when the mine was shut down. 

Alaska's most accessible glacier, Mendenhall, is in Juneau.  This 12-mile long river of ice is one of Juneau's most popular visitor destinations and is accessible by road or air.  You can rent a helicopter and actually land on Mendenhall.   Glacier hiking is the most popular activity for locals and visitors alike.  Also popular are the whale and wildlife watching from a catamaran and kayaking around Auke Bay.  Sightseers may want to take the Mt. Roberts Tramway up  1,800 feet to Mt. Roberts.

The Alaska State Museum is a great place to catch up on the history of the area and sharpen your knowledge of the native Eskmo Athabaskan and Northwest Coast Indian tribes.  If you want to learn about the Salmon industry, visit the below ground viewing windows at the Gastineau Salmon Hatchery which raises and harvests salmon.
